Career Technical Initiative
About the Free 13-Week Program
As part of a multi-year strategy, the South Shore Technical Institute will be training new skilled workers in key trades and technical jobs. This model will be supported by the MASSHIRE Workforce Board.
Through a CTI Grant initiative, from the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, we seek to address the persistent need for skilled labor in construction, trades, and manufacturing. Our goal is to close the skills gap facing employers by providing under-employed and unemployed youth and adults with opportunities to retrain for skilled jobs. By turning our vocational high school into a Career Technical Institute, we hope to bring more adults to grow our community's trades and job variability.
Funds will be allocated to help students, who may receive gas cards and other incentives.
*The courses are free for qualified applicants through the MassHire Career Centers.
Automotive
This 220-hour automotive course provides a hands-on foundation for aspiring technicians, covering everything from tire and oil services to electrical diagnostics and OSHA 10 safety. Running Monday–Thursday (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM), the program blends technical repair skills with professional job-readiness training to prepare you for an immediate career in the industry.
Culinary
This 220-hour introductory course prepares students for the culinary workforce through hands-on training in a state-of-the-art kitchen. Running Monday–Thursday (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM), the curriculum focuses on essential hospitality operations, professional cooking strategies, and the foundational skills necessary to manage day-to-day responsibilities in a commercial environment.
HVAC
This 220-hour introductory course delivers the hands-on training and certifications—including EPA 608, OSHA 10, and Hot Works—needed for a career in HVAC. Held Monday–Thursday (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM), the program covers soldering, refrigeration troubleshooting, and electrical circuitry, ensuring graduates are job-ready to install, maintain, and repair systems as valuable team assets.
Manufacturing
This 220-hour introductory course offers hands-on training in a real machine shop to prepare students for Massachusetts’ manufacturing sector. Running Monday–Thursday (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM), the program focuses on machining processes, tool usage, and quality control, equipping graduates with the practical skills and industry best practices needed for immediate employment.
Metal Fabrication
& Welding
This 220-hour introductory course prepares students for entry-level welding through hands-on training in shop safety, tool operation, and fabrication techniques like lap joints and fillet welding. Running Monday–Thursday (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM), the program focuses on joining metals and thermoplastics through high-heat applications and visual inspections, ensuring graduates are ready for real-world welding roles.
